Taliesin Live - Catrin Finch and Cimarrón

Catrin Finch and Cimarrón

Back in 2007, Welsh harpist Catrin Finch met with Colombian joropo band Cimarrón and embarked on an exhilarating tour of Wales, a collaboration repeated in 2009 and 2010. Ten years later, Catrin and Cimarrón meet again to tour the UK.

Catrin Finch is a remarkable and fearless artist, one of the world’s leading harp players, whose career has featured both solo performances with the world’s top orchestras and, more recently, collaborations with leading world music artists, including Toumani Diabate and, most successfully, Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita, with whom she forms “one of the most popular world music acts of this decade” (Tim Cumming, Songlines).

The 6-piece Grammy-nominated Cimarrón perform joropo dance music from the cattle-rearing plains of the Orinoco, rooted in a deep tradition defined by the mestizo mixed heritage of African, Spanish and indigenous cultures, and led by the late harpist and composer Carlos Rojas. Cimarrón make wild, untamed music that preserves the spirit of freedom found in one of the world’s most untouched regions. Fast paced and powerful, it’s music, with impetuous singing, amazing stomp dancing and fierce instrumental virtuosity of strings and percussion.

A rare chance to witness a thrilling global collaboration.

Carlos Cuco Rojas

It is with great sadness that we can confirm that Carlos Cuco Rojas, harpist, musician and leader of the Colombian band Cimarrón, passed away just before the tour of the UK.

Carlos and his partner Ana Veydó were the driving force behind Cimarron, who only this autumn were recognized with a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album.

Whilst these are incredibly sad circumstances, Ana and Carlos did discuss what would happen when he was ill, and they were both very determined that this tour should go ahead with or without him, as a celebration of his life and his music.

Harpist Duvan Rodolfo will play in place of Carlos Rojas at the Taliesin concert.
