In 1945 Poland, Mathilde, a young French Red Cross doctor, is sent to assist the survivors of the German camps. She discovers several nuns in advanced states of pregnancy during a visit to a nearby convent. A non-believer, Mathilde enters the sisters’ fiercely private world, dictated by the rituals of their order. Fearing the shame of exposure, the hostility of the new anti-Catholic Communist government, and facing an unprecedented crisis of faith, the nuns increasingly turn to Mathilde as their belief and traditions clash with harsh realities.

‘It gives us war as seen by the women it rolls over and it quietly exults as they help each other back to their feet.’ BOSTON GLOBE
