The man behind the public persona - revealing the 'real' Richard Burton

Opinionated and complex, Richard Burton is as fascinating now as he ever was. For the first time, his surviving diaries, offering a fresh and intriguing perspective on an honest and frank Burton, are published by Yale University Press.

The Diaries will be irresistible to anyone wanting to know more about Burton, his romance with Elizabeth Taylor, and the deeply human character beyond one of film’s larger-than-life true icons.

The diaries were presented to Swansea University as part of a collection of her husband's papers by Sally Burton, and have been edited by Chris Williams, Director of the Research Institute for Arts and Humanities (RIAH) and Professor of Welsh History.

To mark the launch of the Diaries, RIAH will be celebrating with an evening dedicated to Burton. There will be a unique opportunity to purchase and have your copy of the Diaries signed by editor Chris Williams, hear him read from the diaries and disclose a number of surprises. The reading will be introduced by Professor Dai Smith, Chair of the Arts Council of Wales and followed by an audience Q&A session.

The evening will culminate in a screening of The Taming of The Shrew (1967) featuring Burton and Taylor, a film that features prominently in the Diaries.
